New Vinyl Shower Curtains Found To Be Hazardous
The odor you smell when you open a new curtain might actually be extremely toxic and dangerous for your health.
According to a report (pdf) released by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, brand new vinyl shower curtains release numerous dangerous chemicals into the air in your home, some releasing as many as 100 chemicals, at levels that violate indoor safety standards.
The report claims that the toxins could be linked to damage to respiratory, central nervous, and reproductive systems, as well as liver damage.
However, the vinyl industry claims that their vinyl shower curtains are safe and that the report is simply fear mongering.
You be the judge. Here are some articles you might want to read and make your own decision.
What can you do to lessen your exposure to these toxic chemicals?
- Consider hanging your new vinyl shower curtain outside for a few days.
- Purchase a shower curtain made from an alternative material, such as hemp, cotton, or some other non-toxic, natural material. Hemp is also naturally resistant to mold and bacteria.
- PEVA shower curtains are also an option, if you want a similar style to vinyl.
